Although many have described the project as an alternative to ownCloud Dropbox rather think it is ownCloud Gnome alternative and KDE to Ubuntu One . Oddly enough, two competitors in the desktop seems to have come together to collaborate and develop a working environment in the cloud in the manner of those virtual hard disks.

It appears that KDE is responsible for developing the backend, the back of the application and the Gnome frontend, or put another way, the interface that the user sees and uses. It would develop a free alternative to Dropbox, clearly showing in this way that Ubuntu One uses a portion for storage that is not totally free. And these guys are so particular about the purity of open source, a small blemish blemish all the honor of the project.

Furthermore, the idea is to allow applications to function hosted by the virtual hard disk, so that in addition to simple storage have more options for have applications in the cloud, the way Google or Zoho perhaps. Anyway, it is only a preliminary draft that we must go and see as defined in the SummerofCode2010.

What’s more the idea goes a little further thought to allow install it on your own server, which works for Mac, Windows or Linux and synchronizing with a desktop client light. It would have the option to backup, encryption of information to other solutions. In short, a good free alternative to Ubuntu One, which should lead exceed all performance points very clearly.
