These changes have led them to change the name of the desktop environment, K Desktop Environment, will now be called KDE Plasma , with two versions, one for desktop computers (Desktop) and one for netbooks (Netbook) The symbol KDE will be preserved for the developer community and the entire suite of applications it develops.

The structure developments KDE is going to split, from now, into three branches:

  • KDE Applications : the various programs developed, and Okular, Dolphin, Amarok, Krita, etc … also includes the KOffice packages, KDE Kontact or KDE Edu.
  • KDE Workspace , the application execution environments, including those above KDE Plasma Desktop and Netbook. Do not rule out expanding the supply adapted to other devices.
  • KDE Platform : the base of libraries and services required to run applications KDE .

Also be distributed from here, packages called KDE Software Compilation , which will contain the latest versions of applications developed by KDE . The first version of these packages was launched last Friday and already contains the new nomenclature of all its elements.
