KDE SC (by KDE for short) is a compilation of comprehensive software, which features a desktop environment (Plasma), a window manager (KWin) and a wide range of applications. Based on the Qt libraries, KDE focuses on the look and feel , ie the look and feel and customization capabilities .
In this new version, KDE SC 4.4, the name “Caikaku” , has made many improvements, we will analyze in depth in this post.
Plasma
Plasma, the workspace KDE , is undoubtedly the most improved in this update . In this video, you can see the greatest improvement of Plasma:
In Plasma, we have the powerful KRunner , a text window with multiple functions, from launching applications to send emails, and that in this new version also allows us to control music players, and convert units of measure for Wikipedia from your desktop. In this video I show its capabilities, along with KWin.
Akonadi and Nepomuk
Akonadi is responsible for synchronizing KDE-PIM (Personal Information Manager) applications suite KDE to manage all your personal information (calendar, contacts, mail, diaries, notes, RSS , news …) and may use different data sources like Google for contacts and calendars, WebDAV for mail, etc.. Moreover, Nepomuk is the engine called semantic desktop, ie is responsible for creating and managing metadata files (ratings, comments, type, content, …) and search them.

In this new version, and Nepomuk Akonadi besides getting significant improvements in yield , now integrates much better with each other, producing an integrated desktop, easily accessible tenen where all our personal data, files, photos, documents etc..
The only flaw is that the file indexer, Strigi, is a giant devours resources , and probably if we have to disable desktop fluency.
Applications
There are many notable changes in this section. There is three new games (Granati, Bomberman clone, Kigo, game of Go, and Palapeli, puzzle) and two scientific applications for graphics, Cantor and Rocs. The most interesting is Blogilo , a blogging client for simple and easy to use.
Blogilo allows us to create and edit entries on blogs that use WordPress, Blogger, and MovableType MetaWeblog . There is also visual editors ( WYSIWYG ) and HTML . Other features include the ability to create drafts, schedule entries, upload images and view local entry with the style of your blog. Here is a screenshot of this client:
In terms of applications
already exist, we find improvements in these applications include:
- KMail implements the search by tags, export entire folders and improvements in templates .
- Kopete now lets you create avatars of a webcam .
- KGet adds support for file verification, broken links and mirrors .
- Okular offers normal and reverse search files DVI and PDF .
- KAlgebra
has a new option for parametric functions and lists .
- Dolphin now has integrated search, version control and a timeline to view the files by date modified .
- KAddressBook
is renewed and integrated with Akonadi, and therefore with the whole desktop
Furthermore, it has improved the
GetHotNewStuff
, which allows us to to add new functionality applications with content created by users and hosted on KDE-look.org or kde-apps.org, like new widgets for Plasma, game styles, color combinations, window decorations, icons and various other things. Further improvements in
KDE
SC 4.4 include the creation of a separate licensing framework of the platform and support for . multi-touch devices No doubt,
KDE
keeps getting better and recovering from that unstable KDE 4.0, reaching a desktop environment, from my point of view, is the most versatile and complete reference available.
