The best demonstration that it is possible to watch videos on an extremely simple, no installation of plugins and above all avoiding the heavy and unstable Flash ? YouTube , of course.

As I commented days ago, the video site Google is experimenting with getting rid of Flash to display videos leveraging the benefits of HTML5 and h.264 . How? simply activating the beta in HTML5 YouTube Video Player . Immediately afterwards, you can access any video (as long as advertising has not before) the site and see it.

The difference is extremely superior , for two reasons:

  1. The quality native codec h.264 is much better than Flash (which ultimately was not invented for watching videos).
  2. But above all, the processor usage required to view videos using h.264 is extream below to watch the same video using the Flash plugin.

In future this will mean some improvements, especially for mobile platforms. Leaving aside the discussion of whether the / iPhone iPod touch / iPad should be included or not support Flash reality is that a website where others are not needed to view content and should be able to play with decoding native (including hardware-as happens with some netbooks) is much more efficient.

At the moment the beta of YouTube with HTML5 h.264 works with:

  • Google Chrome
  • Apple Safari (version 4)
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer with Google Chrome Frame
